Well done to Kaye and the NZ woman masters team!

OUTRIGGER SPRINTS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - May 25 – 29th 2010 - Noumea, New Caledonia

A hard out year of training on the water, in the gym, on the streets running or cycling, topped off with many trips to Rotorua, Auckland and Wellington to train with the New Zealand Master Women’s team, not to mention sacrifices made with families and friends finally paid off when I attended the World Championships recently! What a total buzz!!!

A total of 16 countries presented themselves in Noumea. Tahiti seeded number one with outrigging being their national sport. For my grade, we entered in 5 different events; 3 in the Master Women’s division and 2 in the Open Women’s. The results were as followed;

  1. Gold Medal in the 12 man – double hull that requires succinct timing and power in water with large group – Master Women’s Grade

  2. Silver Medal in the 12 man – double hull – Open Women’ Grade

  3. Silver Medal in the 6 man – Master Women’s 500 metres

  4. Bronze Medal in the 6 man – Master Women’s 1000 metres – a turning race around buoys placed 250metres apart.

  5. 5th Placing in the Open Women’s 500metres.

Canada, Tahiti, Australia and our other NZ teams were very competitive and pushed us hard in every race!

Being new to outrigging in just over a year from a triathlete background, I am very hooked and am looking forward to paddling in the next Worlds in Canada 2012 where I hope to represent not only in a top team but in the singles as well. I have gained more than knowledge and physical changes from this sport. I have made life-changing friendships from all around the country that will continue when we take part in Marathon events!!! Bring on Molokai, Hawaii!!!!
